Impact garage doors are built and tested to resist wind-borne debris as well as wind pressure across the whole opening. Some garage doors are rated for wind load only: they carry a pressure label and still are not impact rated, so check which rating a door has before you buy.
The garage door matters to the whole house. The FEMA P-804 wind retrofit guide describes garage doors as large, often unreinforced openings that are commonly damaged in high winds. When an opening fails, pressure inside the house rises while the roof is pulled from outside.
We size each door to its opening and the design pressure that opening needs, then match it to an approval valid where you live. In Miami-Dade and Broward, part of the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, that means a Miami-Dade NOA or a Florida Product Approval valid in the HVHZ.
A wind-load rating shows the pressure a door resists; an impact rating adds a debris test. For garage doors, the state wind mitigation form (OIR-B1-1802) refers to ANSI/DASMA 115 for impact, while ANSI/DASMA 108 covers wind pressure only.
In Miami-Dade and Broward, garage doors are tested to the TAS protocols.
Design pressure (DP) is the wind load a door is rated for, in pounds per square foot, with one value for inward push and one for outward suction.
It is worked out per opening from your area’s wind speed, the home’s height and exposure and where the door sits, and a wide door has to meet it across its full span.
Yes, if the glass is impact rated. FEMA P-804 notes that glazed garage doors need impact protection, and FLASH says doors without glass perform better unless the glass is impact rated.
Decide on windows before you order, since the approval covers the door as it is built. Protecting the rest of the house too? See impact windows for every other opening.
Look inside the door, usually on a panel edge or near the track. The label shows the pressure rating in psf. No label? Photograph the door and email it to info@gousahi.com, or have it ready when we call; an unlabeled door is hard to verify on a wind mitigation inspection.
Not replacing yet? Here is how to brace a garage door before a storm.
Width, height, single or double, design pressure, glass or no glass, insulation, the opener and work on the opening all move the price.
We pull a permit for every project. HOA approval is needed only when the property has an HOA, and many associations control garage door style and color, so check the rules before you order.
Not sure what your garage door is rated for? Find the label inside the door, take a photo, and note the width of the opening.
We will call you back, help you check whether the door is impact rated, and price a replacement if it is not. Or call (877) 554-6373.
A garage door that holds keeps wind and rain out of the garage and the rooms beside it. FLASH cites NIST research showing that homes whose garage doors held were more likely to keep their roofs.
For many families the garage is the real front door. An impact door does that job every day, and it does not depend on a temporary brace when a hurricane watch is issued.
A labeled impact door, its product approval and a closed permit give the inspector, your insurer and a future buyer something they can check, instead of a guess about an old door.
The OIR-B1-1802 form asks the inspector for the weakest form of wind-borne debris protection on the house, and the garage door is one of the openings. See other home upgrades that can lower insurance rates.
Your replacement is permitted and inspected. We quote a garage door whose approval covers your opening size and design pressure, and you can ask for its Florida Product Approval number.
