Awning Impact Windows

Awning impact windows are hinged at the top and swing outward from the bottom, so the open sash forms a small canopy over the opening. They work well over a kitchen sink, high on a bathroom wall or beside a picture window. Each is a made-to-measure ES Windows unit.

How an awning impact window opens: a handle pushes the sash out from the bottom while the top stays hinged to the frame, a multi-point lock pulls it closed, and the screen sits on the inside where storm debris cannot reach it.

That top hinge is the point of the style. With the sash angled out and down, light rain tends to run off the glass instead of blowing straight in, so the window can stay cracked open during a passing shower.

Awnings are usually smaller than hung or casement windows, so they often sit above, below or beside a large fixed picture impact window to bring airflow to a wall of glass.

Above a kitchen sink, high on a bathroom wall for privacy, over a tub, or stacked under a fixed window in a living room. Placed high, an awning lets warm air escape near the ceiling while the view and privacy lower down stay as they are. Keep the swing clear of walkways, because the sash projects outward when open.

Often not on its own. An awning’s clear opening is limited by its size and by how far the sash swings, and every bedroom needs an emergency escape opening that meets Florida’s building code; an exterior door also counts. Where the awning is the only window, we pair it with a casement or a single hung window with a large enough sash.

We install ES Windows exclusively, in aluminum and vinyl frames. The ES presentation does not list awning windows by series, so at the estimate we confirm which ES series makes an awning in the size, frame and finish you need. Every unit is made to measure, and you can receive its Florida Product Approval number on request.

A small sash still gets the impact glass its approval requires. Add Low-E glass where the sun hits hardest, such as a west-facing kitchen, or ask whether Solarban 70, which ES lists for its Multimax line, is offered for your awning. Flat or ogee grids are optional and can match the windows beside it.

With the sash open, you can often reach the outer glass from inside; on a ground floor, cleaning from outside is quicker. Wipe the hinge track, keep the operator clean and dry, and check that the seal along the bottom edge closes evenly. Because the screen is inside, it stays clear of storm debris.

Why Awnings

Air in the Rain

Five ways a top-hinged impact window earns its spot over a sink, a tub or a picture window.

Rain-Shedding Sash

Leave an awning cracked in a passing shower and the angled sash helps keep rain off the sill. Close and lock it before a storm, and the impact glass and frame protect the opening with no shutter to put up.

Private Ventilation

Set high on a bathroom wall, an awning lets steam and warm air out while the opening stays above eye level. Moisture with nowhere to go feeds mildew, which our tips for preventing mold at home cover in more detail.

Fits Under Big Glass

An awning under or over a fixed window turns a wall of glass into one that can breathe. When the grids and finishes match, the pair reads as one opening from the street.

A Tight Closed Seal

When the handle pulls the sash shut, the multi-point lock draws it against the weather seal along its edges. With Low-E glass where the sun is strong, a closed awning helps hold cooled air in and manage solar heat.

Locks Across the Sash

The multi-point lock holds the bottom edge of the sash at more than one point, so there is no single latch to pry. Keep your permit record, and ask us for each window’s Florida Product Approval number if an inspector or insurer wants it.

Steam With No Exit

A bathroom with a fixed pane or a jammed window traps steam, and the moisture shows up as peeling paint and mildew. A top-hinged awning set high on the wall gives that damp air a way out.

Seized Operators

Old awning operators corrode in salt air until the handle spins freely or the sash refuses to close. A window that will not shut is a real problem when a storm is on its way.

Heat Over the Sink

Old single-pane glass over a kitchen counter lets the afternoon sun bake the room. An awning with Low-E glass helps manage that heat and still opens for air while you cook.
